A Second Chance at Life: 14-Year-Old Survives Near-Fatal Gunshot Wound at Kakuma

The miraculous survival and recovery of William, a young refugee who survived a gunshot to the head, thanks to swift neurosurgical intervention at Tophill Hospital.

Tragedy in the Midst of Chaos

On July 28, what began as a protest over food shortages at the Kakuma Refugee Camp turned into a life-altering tragedy for 14-year-old William. While he was merely a bystander watching the demonstrations, the escalation of violence led to a stray bullet striking him in the head.

"Initially, we thought he was dead," recalled his cousin, James Lafanga Alusio. "But by God’s grace, he was still breathing."

The Long Road to Specialized Care

William’s survival was a race against time. His journey to recovery spanned multiple medical facilities:

  1. Initial Stabilization: First aid at the camp and local regional clinics.

  2. Lodwar Hospital: Doctors worked for hours to manage his trauma before recognizing the need for specialist intervention.

  3. Tophill Hospital: Referred to Eldoret’s neurosurgical hub, where a team led by Dr. Florentius Koech was ready to perform the complex surgery required to save his life.

The Surgical Miracle: Navigating Brain Trauma

The injury was catastrophic. Dr. Florentius Koech described a harrowing trajectory that few survive. The bullet entered the left front of William's skull and exited through the back, tumbling as it traveled and destroying vital brain tissue along its path.

"The trajectory caused extensive fractures and internal damage. It is truly miraculous that he survived such significant trauma to the brain."Dr. Florentius Koech, Lead Neurosurgeon.
A Remarkable Recovery

When William first arrived at Tophill Hospital, he was silenced by his injuries—unable to speak or recognize his surroundings. Following intensive surgery and specialized post-operative care, his progress has defied the odds:

  • Restored Speech: He is now able to talk and communicate with his family.

  • Cognitive Function: He recognizes names and responds to stimuli.

  • Physical Strength: While he currently experiences weakness on his left side, he is eating independently and showing steady daily improvement.

Gratitude for Compassionate Excellence

For William’s family, Tophill Hospital has been a sanctuary of hope. James Lafanga praised the facility for its swift action and humanity. "This is a hospital with a difference," he said. "They treated my cousin with professionalism and compassion from the moment we arrived."

As William prepares for discharge, his story stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the life-saving impact of advanced neurosurgical care.
