'12 Years of Pain Ended in One Surgery': Eldama Ravine Woman Walks Again After Life-Changing Treatment at Tophill Hospital

After battling more than a decade of debilitating pain, misdiagnoses, and incorrect psychiatric treatments, Emily from Eldama Ravine finally found answers at Tophill Hospital. Advanced MRI scans performed under Dr. Florentius Koech uncovered advanced scoliosis, which was successfully corrected through specialized spinal surgery, restoring her mobility, independence, and peace of mind.

For more than a decade, Emily, a resident of Eldama Ravine in Baringo County, lived with relentless pain that robbed her of her health, career, and hope. Today, she is back on her feet after a complex spinal surgery at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret restored her mobility and transformed her life.

Her journey began in 2013 while working in Kisumu and pursuing a master's degree. What started as numbness in her right arm and leg gradually progressed into severe pain spreading from her neck across her chest and down her back. Initially believing it was fatigue or stress, Emily sought treatment at several hospitals.

Week after week, she was prescribed painkillers, but the pain only intensified. Different doctors offered different explanations, with some attributing her condition to nerve pain and others suggesting it was psychological. As the months passed, everyday activities became increasingly difficult. Sleeping, sitting, eating and walking turned into painful experiences.

By 2014, her deteriorating health forced her to transfer from Kisumu to Kabarnet to be closer to her family. However, despite numerous hospital visits, she remained without a clear diagnosis. The physical pain soon took an emotional toll. Emily recalls losing hope as her condition worsened, often crying silently at night while wondering why no one could explain what was happening to her.

Pregnancy Brought More Challenges

Hoping for a fresh start, Emily became pregnant in 2015. Instead of relief, pregnancy intensified her suffering. She experienced severe back pain, dizziness and weakness throughout the pregnancy. By the final months, she could barely sit up without assistance and spent much of her time confined to bed.

After giving birth in 2016, her condition worsened further. She developed severe depression and struggled to care for her newborn baby. Doctors diagnosed her with bipolar disorder and placed her on medication, but while the treatment addressed her mental health, it failed to relieve the persistent physical pain. For years, Emily was told that much of her pain was psychological, even though she remained convinced there was an underlying physical problem.

A Husband Who Never Gave Up

Emily's husband, Kevin, watched helplessly as the woman he knew gradually lost her independence. He took her to numerous hospitals and specialists, exhausting the family's finances while searching for answers. At one point, the family even considered traditional explanations for her unexplained illness as desperation grew.

Despite years of disappointment, Kevin refused to give up hope that one day they would find the right diagnosis.

The Turning Point

Everything changed in 2018 when Emily remembered that her mother had previously undergone successful spinal treatment by neurosurgeon Dr. Florentius Koech at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret. Encouraged by her family's experience, she travelled to the hospital seeking another opinion. By then, her condition had deteriorated significantly, and she required assistance simply to walk into the hospital.

Dr. Koech recalls that Emily presented with years of unexplained pain affecting her neck, chest and back after receiving treatment elsewhere without lasting improvement. Rather than immediately recommending surgery, he first advised conservative treatment, including lifestyle modifications and posture correction.

However, when the symptoms persisted, he ordered a detailed MRI scan. The scan finally revealed the cause that had gone undetected for years—advanced scoliosis, a severe curvature of the spine that was compressing nerves and affecting her movement, posture and breathing.

For Emily, receiving an accurate diagnosis after years of uncertainty was both emotional and reassuring.

Surgery Restored Her Life

Following thorough evaluation, Dr. Koech recommended corrective spinal surgery to straighten the spine and relieve pressure on the affected nerves. The complex operation was successfully performed, correcting the spinal deformity and stabilizing the spine. The improvement was almost immediate. Within weeks, Emily began walking comfortably, sitting without pain and breathing normally again. The chronic pain that had dominated her life for over a decade gradually disappeared.

Today, she has returned to work, drives independently, cares for her family and has resumed many of the activities she once believed she would never enjoy again.

A Story of Hope

Dr. Koech said Emily's recovery demonstrates the importance of accurate diagnosis and specialized spinal care. He noted that not every patient suffering from chronic pain has a psychological condition and emphasized that persistent symptoms deserve thorough investigation to identify the underlying cause.

For Kevin, the transformation has restored peace to their home after years of uncertainty and emotional strain. Emily hopes her journey will encourage others living with unexplained pain not to lose hope or stop seeking answers. Her story stands as a powerful reminder that the right diagnosis, skilled medical care and determination can restore health even after years of suffering. Today, after spending more than 12 years battling debilitating pain, Emily is once again living independently, c guyaring for her family and looking to the future with renewed hope.
